ALBUM REVIEW: LORDS OF ACID - PRETTY IN KINK

It has been six years since Belgium EDM pioneers ‘Lords of Acid’ released their thrash inspired ‘Deep Chills’ but the sexually charged ravers are back with their new crowd-funded record ‘Pretty In Kink’. Unlike many of their contemporaries, ‘Lords of Acid’ have not grown stale with age. Despite being in the scene for almost twenty years, ‘Pretty In Kink’ still sounds fresh and exciting. This is down to the fact that the puppet master behind the strings Praga Khan refuses to stick to the same formula. Whilst this is undoubtedly an EDM album, the guitars take a prominent role at the foreground with a tone not dissimilar to early ‘Prodigy’. Both early ‘The Prodigy’ and ‘Massive Attack’ can be heard throughout ‘Pretty In Kink’, especially on songs like 'Before The Night Is Over' and 'Sex Cam Girl' but the music never sounds dated. As with the rest of their back catalogue, ‘Pretty In Kink’ is a celebration of decadence, sexual exploration and narcotic experimentation. Subtlety has never been on the table and songs like ‘Sex Cam Girl’, ‘Flow Juice’ and ‘Break Me’ continue the legacy of great tracks that make you want to take a cocktail of drugs and start an orgy. Marieke Bresseleers’ sensual vocals seduce and excite with every line and the dual vocals between her and Praga Khan keep the energy flowing throughout.

‘Lords of Acid’ show no signs of slowing down and we can only imagine how the new material will sound in a live show. 8/10

Personal Highlight: Party anthem ‘Like Pablo Escobar’ epitomises everything that ‘Lords of Acid’ celebrate and stand for. This is sex, drugs and rock’n’roll taken to the extreme and we struggle to see how anyone can resist their seductive allure.

'Pretty In Kink' is out on 18th May 2018
