SINGLE REVIEW: KOVAX - COBALT

Drawing inspiration from artists such as 'Black Peaks' and 'Reuben'; Leeds based hardcore outfit 'Kovax' formed at the start of 2016. Their debut EP 'If There Was Ever Any Doubt' was released in May last year and the band have been steadily building their reputation for heavy riffs and visceral live shows over the past twelve months.

Their new single 'Cobalt' is our first clue as to the direction that the band are taking for their highly anticipated follow up and it is a direction that we are very keen to hear more of. Where the debut EP was a decent collection of songs from a band finding its feet, 'Cobalt' is the sound of a well oiled machine with high ambitions. With a running time of just over two minutes, the track accomplishes an astounding amount of creativity within such a short period. Kicking off with a guitar riff reminiscent of 'Cancer Bats' or 'Stray From The Path', vocalist Pete Freeth launches into a tirade that is not dissimilar to the chaotic fury of early 'Korn' or 'Sikth'. The improved level of production makes a powerful impact and the band are firing on all cylinders. The mathy riffs and crushing 'Employed To Serve' style breakdowns show a level of technicality that was less noticeable on their previous recordings and we are left hungry for more.

If the rest of the upcoming EP lives up to the same quality as 'Cobalt' then 'Kovax' have the potential to achieve great things and we are 100% behind them.

4/5

'Cobalt' will be released on the 7th May 2018
