SINGLE REVIEW: ACCURSED SPAWN - BHOPAL 84

Canada, one of the nicest and most polite countries in the world. Ask anyone what comes to mind when you mention Canada and you will probably be given a pleasant list of stereotypes along the lines of warm smiles, maple syrup and ice hockey. Not only is Canada a notoriously friendly place, but it has also become an immense breeding ground for extreme metal bands in recent years. In the space of two weeks, Spirit level have already reviewed the latest releases from 'Profane Order' and 'Ominous Eclipse', now 'Accursed Spawn' have released their first single for their debut album 'The Virulent Host' which is currently scheduled for a 2019 release.

Formed in Ottowa in 2010, 'Accursed Spawn' have released three EP's, but have yet to release a full length record. Their last EP 'Putrid' was released in 2014 and with song titles such as 'Coathanger Abortion' and 'Stabbed in the Dick' in their back catalogue you would be forgiven for assuming that the new record would just be more of the same over the top, painting by numbers death metal.

What we were not expecting however is that 'Accursed Spawn' would begin branching into political terrains with their new song (and opening track for the upcoming record) 'Bhopal 84'. The song title is in reference to the infamous industrial Bhopal disaster which caused the deaths of thousands of Indians after a horrific toxic gas leak. Guitarist Adam Bell has stated that 'Bhopal 84' "will give a good deal of insight into what people can expect from this record;" and we couldn't be happier. 'Bhopal 84' is anger with a purpose, the brutal and violent lyrics of death metal hit so much harder when you realise that the horrors they are describing are accounts of a true event. "As long as corporate greed overshadows human need, the elite will succeed whilst the rest of us bleed" Luke Wargasm roars; and it is impossible not to share his anger towards a faceless corporation that is responsible for the deaths of so many without consequence. Whilst the lyrics and message are commendable, they would mean nothing if the music wasn't up to scratch. 'Bhopal 84' sees 'Accursed Spawn' at the top of their game with thundering drums and savage riffs throughout.

Easily one of the best songs that 'Accursed Spawn' have released so far, we are very excited to see how the band progress in their upcoming debut.
