SINGLE REVIEW: GONE BY SUNDOWN - WILL YOU REMEMBER

Hailing from Umeå in the North of Sweden, symphonic metal band 'Gone By Sundown' was originally founded as a two-piece in 2013. A debut single was hastily recorded but due to multiple issues the band was put on an indefinite hiatus. Last year however, bassist and founder Tonie Rombin set about reestablishing the band as a fully established outfit. Before long 'Gone By Sundown' was reborn as a six-piece group and the band quickly began writing new material. 'Will You Remember' is the bands first single from their upcoming debut EP 'The Endless Path'.

Before we begin our review, it is only fair that we confess that we are not overly familiar with the sub-genre of Symphonic Metal. Aside from a few 'Nightwish' and 'Within Temptation' records the musical style has mostly slipped us by. Be that as it may, 'Will You Remember' is an impressive debut from 'Gone By Sundown'. Starting with an impressive orchestral score that was arranged by Andreas Denatuz of 'Mist of Misery' fame the song progresses into a collection of heavy guitars and pounding drums. Vocalist Frida Gradin's voice soars operatic over the track with enough bite to it that she never sounds polarising. The comparisons with Finnish legends 'Nightwish' are clear but 'Gone By Sundown' never sound like a tribute act and more than hold their own.

Ronnie Björnström's production works wonders for this band who already sound as though they have been in the game for considerably longer than they have so far. We may not be overly familiar with the genre, but we look forward to hearing the rest of 'The Endless Path' in the near future.
