SINGLE REVIEW: BLACK PEAKS - CAN'T SLEEP

Black Peaks return with their new single 'Can't Sleep'.

In 2016, Brighton quartet 'Black Peaks' seemingly came from nowhere and unleashed their debut record 'Statues' to the world. The positive response was unanimous and after a series of phenomenal shows with the likes of 'Employed to Serve', 'Deftones', 'Heck' and 'The Dillinger Escape Plan' they quickly cemented themselves as one of the most exciting new bands in the British rock scene.

New single 'Can't Sleep' is the first single from their highly anticipated upcoming sophomore album and marks their first release since moving to Rise Records.

Any concerns of Black Peaks succumbing to the dreaded second album syndrome can be put on hold as Can't Sleep is a continuation of the outstanding Prog/Math Metal hybrid that they achieved so masterfully on their debut. The track begins with a heart-pounding drum roll that rips into an absolute steamroller of an opening riff. Vocalist Will Gardner is on top form as he switches between clean vocals and harsh growls at the flick of a switch.

For the first half of the track, the parallels between Can't Sleep and the opening track of their previous album 'Glass Built Castles' are pretty clear and you could be forgiven for thinking that they may be treading water. These fears are quashed at the halfway point as the band take a sharp turn into a vicious breakdown. The riffs are more frantic, the vocals heavier and the presence of electronics distorting the vocals all come together to make this an entirely new experience. Joe Gosney's guitar solo rips a hole through the outro and before you know it, you are already pressing the replay button for the fifth time in a row.

With their as yet untitled second album promised for later in the year and an upcoming tour with fellow brit-rockers 'Marmozets' just announced, Black Peaks are looking towards an incredible 2018 and Can't Sleep is a great start.
