ALBUM REVIEW: THE HUMAN RACE IS FILTH - LIBERATE

Life is short and it is important to make the most of it while you can. With that in mind Pennsylvania duo 'The Human Race Is Filth' (THRIF for short) are not wasting any time. Formed in 2017, 'Liberate' is their second EP release in less than six months.

Fuelled by anger towards police brutality, social injustices and a certain Commander In Chief; 'Liberate' is a fifteen minute package of pure Doom/Grindcore fury. Despite, there only being a few months since the release of their debut EP 'Human Exposed', 'THRIF' have already progressed significantly in the quality of their output. Continuing with the same formula of blending slow dirge Doom riffs with the frantic chaos of Grindcore; the two-piece manage to create a staggering amount of variety within each track. The vocals are more diverse and savage and the production quality has markedly improved.

The record begins with an eerie soundscape that instantly plunges you into a dystopian nightmare of feedback, warped vocals and kick drums before lurching into a frantic 30 seconds of Punk Rock rage. Track two then dives headfirst into a maelstrom of blast beats and chugging guitars. This record is not easy listening and 'THIF' are definitely not a band for casual listeners who are looking to dip their toes into something heavier, but for fans of 'Napalm Death' or 'Full Of Hell' who are looking for their latest fix of white noise ferocity; 'Liberate' are a band to keep an eye on.

With only two tracks that make it past two minutes in length, this is Grindcore in its most relentless form. 'THIF' still have some work to do, but when you consider how far they have come in such short time; we are very excited to see what comes next.

7/10

Personal Highlight: 'Slow March' is the only track on the entire record that is over three minutes long and it shows an interesting insight into the territories that 'THIF' may explore in future records. The guitars, are slower and doomier than the other tracks, but this adds an extra heaviness that more than compensates for the change in tempo. With an intriguing use of flanger effects in the latter half and a bass tone so low and fuzzy that it threatens to reach the dreaded brown note 'Slow March' proves that 'THIF' are more than just a one trick pony.

'Liberate' is out on 6th April 2018
